We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Senior Database Analyst.
The mission of the Institute for Innovations in Medical Education (IIME) is to combine the science of education with informatics solutions to transform teaching, learning, evaluation and assessment at every level of undergraduate, graduate and continuing medical education. Our focus is on harnessing the rich and comprehensive student assessment and curricular evaluation data points collected throughout medical school to answer core questions about the development of clinical competence and the effectiveness of curriculum. Answering these questions involves creating an efficient data pipeline and analytic infrastructure. To support these efforts, we seek a motivated individual who is interested in contributing to these efforts by helping to organize, manage, analyze, model and visualize longitudinal educational data. Our ultimate goals are to establish connections between medical school activities and clinical competence, to better understand how such competence develops over time, and to build a foundation for providing feedback to learners and educational leadership that maximizes our ability to graduate students who will be outstanding physicians.
The Senior Database Analyst will apply analytical approaches to understanding, defining, visualizing, analyzing and modeling educational and clinical data to evaluate curriculum and training effectiveness, drive educational and administrative decision-making, improve assessment, support educational research and scholarship, and directly contribute to the science and practice of medical education.
* Implement and oversee reproducible data analysis, reporting and research for both service and science projects at IIME and the NYU School of Medicine, including:
Data cleaning/wrangling/re-structuring, visualization and analysis (in script)
Defining and managing data and data pipelines/queries
Generating scripts into reproducible reports
Turning repeated code into functions
Packaging functions for re-use
Using version control
* Develop programming packages (R) to automate routine evaluation and assessment data analysis procedures, primarily for local use but with an eye toward generalizability.
* Design and implement actionable reports and dashboards in R and Tableau, including individual learner-level assessment and outcome data as well as higher-level aggregate data for faculty and educational leadership. Participate in user experience testing and iterative design cycles for reports and dashboards.
* Build basic and advanced statistical analysis and causal models for decision-making with education data, including:
Propensity score matching
* Data Infrastructure Support
Collaborate with the Education Data team to refine data models, back-end data structure, data flows and workflow processes for accessing, analyzing, and visualizing/reporting data as well as implementing and conducting routine data and dashboard Quality Assurance processes.
Participate in data integration efforts and help design and maintain data governance processes.
Maintain large research databases (data mart) for supporting medical education research efforts.
* Capacity Building
Deliver workshops and presentations and collaborate on publications to share best practices of data analysis and visualization in the medical education and healthcare communities at NYULMC and beyond.
Collaborate with faculty, educational leadership, learners (students, resident physicians, healthcare professionals), and administrators in order to ensure most accurate and efficient use of data for decision-making and to design, conduct and report on educational research projects.
Develop and implement natural language processing approaches for analyzing complex narrative data.
Collaborate in conducting predictive analytics and harnessing AI and machine learning techniques for facilitating medical education evaluation and assessment.
To qualify you must have a Bachelors degree in Business, Health, or Public Administration or related field with a minimum of 2-4 years of progressive experience in an academic medical center; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Excellent communication skills are essential to interface effectively with diverse internal and external professional groups and committees.
R (tidyr, dplyr, ggplot2, lmer4), RStudio, R Notebook, and basic knowledge of Git and version control
Some core experience in R and willingness to learn the above is more than acceptable substitute.
Willingness to learn R package development and functions to facilitate automated analysis/reporting
Interest in or experience with Python
Knowledge of and/or experience with Tableau and/or dashboards more generally
Statistical inference and hierarchical modeling
SQL queries/Oracle database
Masters degree in statistics, data analysis, data science preferred but not necessary
Experience managing large data sets, multiple complex projects, and collaborating with multiple stakeholders will be helpful.
